International Scientific Conference “Problems of Cultural Identity in the Context of Contemporary Cultural Dialogue” (2025)

On May 22-23, as part of the Jean Monnet project “Civil Society in Conflict Resolution: EU Experience for Ukraine,” the National University of Ostroh Academy hosted the XVIII International Scientific Conference “Problems of Cultural Identity in the Context of Contemporary Cultural Dialogue.”

Rector’s Assistant for Project Activities at the National University of Ostroh Academy, PhD in Public Administration, Associate Professor, Project Manager Olena Shershnova noted that in today’s world, where individuals and their identities have become targets of information wars, propaganda, and political manipulation, understanding the nature, stability, and transformations of identity has become particularly important.

“Our conference focuses on researching the complex and multidimensional processes that influence the cultural self-awareness of individuals and society as a whole. We have a good track record of attracting professional speakers and identity researchers for 18 years in a row. Today, we would like to express our gratitude to our donor for this opportunity to engage in professional dialogue! The conference is co-funded by the European Union and highlights its commitment to promoting European values—dialogue, tolerance, solidarity, and human rights. We cordially invite you to join us next year for the 19th International Scientific Conference “Problems of Cultural Identity in the Context of Contemporary Cultural Dialogue”!

added Olena Shershnova.

The conference was attended by researchers, teachers, young scientists, students, representatives of professional communities, and civil society.

The conference focused on the following main areas:

  • Identity and civil society.
  • Modern and postmodern searches for identity: the EU experience.
  • The problem of the relationship between global and local identities.
  • The conflict of identities in modern society: political, national, cultural, religious, etc.
  • The stability of identities in hybrid conflicts.
  • Identities of Ukrainian culture.
  • A philosophical review of cultural identity.

Head of the Department of Philosophy and Cultural Management, Doctor of Philosophy, Associate Professor Maria Petrushevych said that the conference has a very long history:

Traditionally, teachers of the Department of Philosophy, and now also of Cultural Management, discussed topics that interested them most: cultural theory, the history of Ukrainian and world cultures, folklore, ethnology, religious studies, classical and non-classical philosophy, i.e., issues in the humanities. Whenever we hold the conference, its theme is always relevant. This event is a great opportunity to share your thoughts, research, and achievements. I wish the participants fruitful discussions and hope that everyone will gain additional motivation for their work and academic life.”

In particular, the conference discussed media, narratives, identity, and how modern hybrid conflicts are transforming the cultural space; a comparative analysis of value dominants in different types of Ukrainian online media (news sites, blogs, Telegram channels, YouTube channels); cultural barriers to communication in European societies; clustering and sustainable recovery; and the transformation of the Orthodox identity of citizens during Ukraine’s independence.

The conference materials are planned to be published.

We would like to remind you that the project “Civil Society in Conflict Resolution: EU Experience for Ukraine” (101084973 — EURoCoRP — ERASMUS-JMO-2022-HEI-TCH-RSCH) is being implemented by the National University of Ostroh Academy with co-funding from the European Union and aims to promote the values of EU civil society in conflict resolution and raise awareness of contemporary hybrid conflicts.
