What is the best way to avoid a protracted war?

In the short term, the answer to the question in the headline is obvious: the United States and its allies must continue to send weapons to Ukraine and provide intelligence and training to enable Kyiv to liberate as much of its territory as possible this year. But medium- and long-term planning is also needed, and that is much more difficult.
