What is the best way to avoid a prolonged war

In the short term, the answer to the headline question is obvious: The United States and its allies should continue to send weapons, intelligence and training to Ukraine to ensure that Kyiv is able to liberate as much of its territory as possible this year. But medium- and long-term planning is also needed, and that is much more difficult.
