On June 15, 1987, the Council of the European Union officially approved the Erasmus Programme, and it was formally launched on July 1 of the same year.
Over nearly four decades, this initiative has become one of the most successful EU programmes, supporting millions of students, educators, and youth workers across Europe. The name “Erasmus” is associated with Erasmus of Rotterdam — a prominent humanist of the Renaissance era who traveled extensively across Europe, teaching and conducting research at various universities. At the same time, the word “Erasmus” also serves as an acronym for the European Community Action Scheme for the Mobility of University Students.
